About Otto's Odyssey - Fluffmole

Universal Studios Halloween Horror Nights is here and it's absolutely amazing!  One of the houses this year is based on the Silent Hill series and it was definitely the best house I went through last night.  I've only been through four of the seven houses so far, but next week I'll be back!  Also, I'm finally getting my damned power supply tomorrow!  I'm so excited for the things to come!  Now then, let's talk a little bit about fluffmoles...

I wish I had more description than this, but unfortunately this is all I've written so far.  Reading it over just now, I think a lot of it could be changed for the better.  However, this is an ongoing process and this particular story aspect hasn't been touched in over three years.  Besides, it certainly isn't high on my priority list.  Anyway, without further ado... fluffmoles.

The Fluffmole is a creature discovered by Otto while he is doing reconnaissance work on the planets surrounding Terrenes. It is an interesting critter with curiosity worse than a cat’s. Also like a cat, it is a completely independent creature; however, the degree of independence is much higher than that of a cat (it won’t become dependent on a creature that provides it with resources or upon discovering a resource-rich area).

While Otto is observing these creatures, he makes a conscious effort not to interfere too much with their natural way of life out of fear of causing them to become dependent upon him. However, he bears witness to one of the fluffmoles engaged in a battle to the death with a predatory creature. The fluffmole barely manages to escape with its life, but is critically injured. Seeing that the fluffmole is the provider for a small family, Otto decides to go against his non-interventional stance and save the fluffmole’s life.

After the injured fluffmole has made a full recovery, it is overwhelmed with joy and appreciation towards Otto. The fluffmole, which Otto calls “Lucky”, is soon assisting Otto at every opportunity. This leads to an interesting discovery about the fluffmoles. It turns out that fluffmoles help out other creatures that they are friendly with. With a little bit of trial and error, Otto discovers that the creatures are able to follow certain orders and commands.

For instance, while exploring the planet, Otto discovers what might be some sort of artifact buried in the earth, but is unable to get it loose. Fortunately, he is able to communicate to Lucky that he wishes for it to dig the object loose. Lucky shakes with glee and quickly obeys the command.

Fluffmoles generally live in small families, with populated areas consisting of about 500 fluffmoles. They are peaceful herbivores and tend to stay undetected by predatory creatures. Fluffmoles move like rabbits, as though they are bouncing from spot to spot, and have the ability to burrow deep in the ground. In Otto’s Odyssey, the fluffmole Lucky assists Otto by burrowing through certain areas in order to allow Otto access to those areas. Lucky can retrieve items for Otto, flip switches, pull levers, push buttons, or do most of any other action necessary to activate a door or other blockade.

...and there you have it. I hope that this creature winds up being an interesting gameplay aspect once I get this game programmed, because that's really what this is all about. I'm sure things will change drastically along the way, though. I'm fine with that as long as it all works out for the best. Thanks for reading!
